Sia la resilienza che l'adattabilità sono competenze chiave che tutte le persone devono avere per adattarsi al cambiamento. Le persone resilienti e adattabili possono abbracciare positivamente il cambiamento e far fronte a situazioni difficili, rendendole risorse preziose sul posto di lavoro.

Adattabilità is the ability to adjust or change in response to new or changing circumstances. It involves being flexible and open to learning, allowing individuals to effectively respond to different situations, challenges, and environments.
They are both important personally and professionally.
Resilience is more than just bouncing back from adversity; it’s about adapting, growingorientata thriving in the face of challenges. For VET educators, resilience involves maintaining a sense of purpose, staying flexible in the face of change, and building a supportive network of colleagues and resources. By developing resilience, you can better cope with stress, embrace innovation, and sustain your passion for teaching and learning.
There are five skills associated with resilience. These are:
Take some time to reflect using these questions:
Can you recall a specific challenging situation you faced personally or professionally and how you dealt with it?
What emotions did you experience during that situation, and how did you manage them?
How did that experience impact you and your approach to future challenges?
How can you build on your resilience going forward?
The aim of this activity is to build a growth mindset by recognising the gaps in existing knowledge and expertise and taking active steps to improve upon them. This helps build resilience by improving your adaptability and flexibility skillset!
Step #1 – Identify an area of interest or skill that you would like to develop further in your teaching practice (e.g., incorporating technology in the classroom, implementing innovative teaching methods).
Step #2 – Set a specific learning goal related to this area, making sure it is challenging yet achievable within a reasonable timeframe.
Step #3 – Research resources and learning opportunities that will help you achieve your goal, such as online courses, workshops, articles, or books.
Step #4 – Create a learning plan outlining the steps you will take to achieve your goal, including timelines and milestones.
Step #5 – Take action by actively engaging in self-directed learning activities, such as:
Step #6 – Reflect on your learning journey regularly, considering the following questions:
Step #7 – Adjust your learning plan as needed based on your reflections and experiences and continue to pursue growth opportunities with a positive and open mindset.
Adopting a growth mindset is foundational to building resilience. Embrace challenges as opportunities for growth, view failures as learning experiences, and believe in your ability to develop new skills and overcome obstacles.
Self-care is essential for maintaining resilience in the demanding field of education – make time for activities that nourish your physical, mental, and emotional well-being, whether it’s exercise, mindfulness practices, hobbies, or spending time with loved ones. Set boundaries to prevent burnout and prioritise activities that replenish your energy.
Build a strong support network within your teaching approach within your educational community. Collaborate with colleagues, share resources and best practices, and seek mentorship from experienced educators. Creating a culture of collaboration builds resilience by providing a sense of belonging and mutual support during challenging times.
Stay agile in your teaching approach by embracing new technologies, pedagogies, and learning techniques. VET educators must adapt to changing needs of learners and industries, integrating real-world experiences, project-based learning, and digital tools into their curriculum. Embrace innovation and experimentation to engage learners and prepare them for the future workforce.
Build a positive mindset and resilience in the face of setbacks and challenges. Focus on what you can control, practice gratitude, and celebrate small victories along the way. Develop resilience-building habits, such as practicing optimism, maintaining perspective, and reframing challenges as opportunities for growth.

Among the educators affected were Maria, a seasoned instructor with over a decade of experience, and David, a relatively new teacher eager to make a positive impact.
Maria found herself in a difficult situation when she learned that her workload would significantly increase due to staff cuts. Despite feeling overwhelmed, she recognised the importance of maintaining her resilience for the sake of her students and colleagues. Maria took proactive steps to manage her stress and adapt to the changes:
David, a recent addition to the teaching staff, faced his own set of challenges as he adjusted to the new demands placed on him. Despite being relatively inexperienced, David demonstrated remarkable resilience and determination in overcoming obstacles:
Despite the initial challenges and uncertainties, Maria and David’s resilience led to positive outcomes for themselves and their students. By prioritising self-care, seeking support, and embracing change, they not only adapted to the new circumstances but also thrived in their roles as VET educators.
